Gerry Taggart praises Caglar Soyuncu’s performances

Former Leicester City defender Gerry Taggart has praised the performances of Caglar Soyuncu during the opening two games of the new Premier League season. The Turkey international made the move to the Foxes from Freiburg during the 2018 summer transfer window but managed just eight appearances across all competitions.

With the departure of Harry Maguire this summer, Soyuncu has partnered Jonny Evans at the heart of the Foxes defence in the opening two games and Taggart believes the 23-year-old has shown an old head on his young shoulders, he said: "I think, even though we haven't really seen him until the week before and last week, for me, there's that rawness about him, (he has) that hunger and desire."

"But what he has showed is a real old head on young shoulders in the last two games, real calmness under pressure that I don't think anybody could have foreseen. That's because he has been slightly rash in the past, but in the last two games, he has literally stepped out of the ashes, into the forefront and gone 'right, it's my time to shine'."

After the big-money departure of Maguire, the Foxes had attempted to pursue Burnley’s James Tarkowski but they could not push through an agreement before the transfer deadline. Nonetheless, they have found the solution in the form of Soyuncu while they have the experienced Wes Morgan and Filip Benkovic to perform the back-up duties.

The east Midlands outfit have made a decent start to the campaign with stalemates against Wolverhampton Wanderers and Chelsea respectively. Against the latter, they made a strong account of themselves during the second period and they could have quite easily beaten the Blues with the amount of chances they had managed. Up next, Brendan Rodger’s side are scheduled to face Sheffield United on the road and they have a good chance of coming up with the maximum points.
